How to Construct Curved Gabion Retaining Wall?

Curved gabion retaining walls have several welded gabion mesh connections fixed in place. These strong gabion structures excel in soil stabilization, erosion control, and slope stability. In addition to their practical function, the curvature created by curved gabion retaining walls can lend an artistic flavor to the environment, making them a popular choice for enhancing riverbanks, garden landscaping, and fencing applications. With a wealth of experience, we can provide gabion products and comprehensive installation guides to ensure the perfect execution of your project.

Installation Location & Materials Confirmation

Step 1
A worker determines installation curve with a wooden stick and a string.

Determine Curve Location

Attach one end of the string to a wooden stick. Tighten the other end of the string to create a curved gabion retaining wall area.

Step 2
A worker marks construction sites on the ground with 2 strings and many stones.

Mark the Curve With Strings

Fix strings in corresponding positions with stones every 1 meter. 2 strings placed on the ground are used to mark the inner and outer sides.

Step 3
A worker measures the string length with a measuring tape.

Measure the Strings

Straighten the 2 strings on the ground and measure the lengths of both strings with measuring tape.

Step 4
Place the gabion meshes one by one according to the strings' tracks.

Purchase Materials

You will need enough welded gabion meshes to cover the length of your inner string's curve.

Ground Preparation Before Installation

Step 1
A worker marks construction sites on the ground with 2 strings and many stones.

Preserve Marked Areas

Try to preserve the marked areas as much as possible to ensure that the curve shape remains the same until the purchased welded gabion meshes arrive.

Step 2
A worker digs a trench along marked areas with a shovel.

Dig

A horizontal trench or ditch is dug according to marked areas to serve as the foundation for the wall. Its depth and width depend on soil conditions and wall height.

Step 3
A layer of geotextile is placed in the trench.

Lay Geotextile

Place a layer of geotextile over the excavated area to prevent weeds from continuing to grow after the wall's installation.

Step 4
A worker puts a layer of gravels on the trench.

Add Gravels

Place a layer of gravels on top of the paved geotextile, and take care to keep the surface level.

Step 5
A worker uses tools to compact gravels in the trench.

Compact Gravels

Walk and stamp on the gravels and compact the gravels with a tramper to provide a flatter, more stable surface.

Installation of Curved Gabion Meshes

Convex Angle Curved Gabion Mesh

Step 1
A worker assembles 2 welded gabion baskets.

Assemble

Assemble the welded gabion baskets with C-clips and leave the top meshes uncovered for subsequent filling with stones.

Step 2
Line up 5 assembled welded gabion baskets in the trench.

Put Into Position

Place the welded gabion baskets in the same position as when you took the measurements. And connect them with C-clips.

Step 3
Rectangular gabion meshes are installed at intervals of 5 welded gabion baskets.

Add Meshes

Connect the convex angle of adjacent welded gabion baskets with customized rectangular curved gabion meshes.

Step 4
A worker fills the welded gabion basket with stones.

Fill Stones

Fill the welded gabion baskets with stones.

Step 5
Install the welded gabion baskets with top meshes.

Install the Top Meshes

Secure the top rectangular and triangular gabion meshes and the installation is complete.

Note: We recommend purchasing a spare 1 m × 1 m gabion mesh that you can cut to the appropriate size in case the curve shape changes slightly.

Concave Angle Curved Gabion Mesh

Step 1
A worker assembles 2 welded gabion baskets.

Assemble

Assemble the welded gabion baskets with C-clips and leave the top mesh uncovered for subsequent filling with stones.

Step 2
A worker uses a bolt cutter to cut overlapping portions of adjacent meshes.

Cut Out Overlapping Adjacent Meshes

Cut the overlapping parts of adjacent meshes with a bolt cutter to create an interface. Secure the interface between 2 gabion baskets with C-clips.

Step 3
5 welded gabion baskets with concave angle assemblies.

Finish the Assembly

Repeat Step 2 and adjust, cut, and secure the gabion baskets in turn, making sure that each gabion basket is adjusted to the corresponding curve until all assemblies are complete.

Step 4
A worker fills the gabion basket with stones.

Fill Stones

Fill the welded gabion baskets with stones.

Step 5
A worker cuts the top mesh based on the angle of the gabion baskets.

Cut Top Meshes

Cut the overlapping parts of the top meshes according to the inclination of the position of each gabion basket.

Step 6
Gabion baskets are installed top meshes.

Install Top Meshes

Secure the top meshes with C-clips and the installation is complete.

Customized Curved Gabion Mesh

For curved gabion mesh, you can purchase enough flat welded meshes to be cut and shaped on-site. The whole process is time-consuming but can be changed flexibly according to site conditions.

In addition, you can provide specifications directly, and we can customize curved gabion mesh for you. Simple assembly is all that is required at your site before use. Below is the installation process of customized curved gabion mesh.

Step 1
2 curved gabion baskets without the top meshes covered

Assemble Gabion Baskets

Assemble customized curved inner and outer meshes, and partition meshes. Then put them in original position.

Step 2
Secure a single curved gabion basket with braces.

Reinforce Gabion Baskets

To prevent the deformation of welded gabion baskets due to the later filling of rocks, braces are necessary to be installed crosswise at half the height of each basket.

Step 3
5 fixed curved gabion baskets.

Finish the Assembly

All welded gabion baskets are assembled together and the assembly is complete.

Step 4
A worker fills the curved gabion basket with stones.

Fill Stones

Fill the welded gabion baskets with stones.

Step 5
The top meshes of the gabion basket are installed.

Install Top Meshes

Install the customized curved top gabion meshes one by one, and the installation is complete.
